Gov. Rick Scott has rejected all suggestions from The Florida Bar to fill vacancies in several of the state's Judicial Nominating Commissions. Scott has turned down at least 90 of the Bar's recommendations for JNC openings since taking office in 2011, according to Bar records. On Dec. 27, William Spicola, Scott's general counsel, wrote a letter to Bar President William J. Schifino Jr., saying the governor wanted the Bar to start over and offer different recommendations for all the current openings. There is now one lawyer vacancy in each of five JNCs: the ones for the 2nd District Court of Appeal, the 3rd District Court of Appeal, and the 6th, 7th, and 20th Judicial Circuits.

Fraudulent email alert!


The Florida Bar warns its members about a fraudulent email with the subject "The Office of The State Attorney Complaint" that is being distributed. 

The Bar advises members not to click on any links contained within the email and to delete it immediately. It is suspected that this email contains a link to a malicious software known as Ransomware.

The fraudulent email informs members that "a complaint has been filed against your business" and asks the recipient to click on a link to review the complaint.

The Florida Bar Practice Resource Institute (PRI) has posted tips and links to other resources for Florida Bar members to use to protect their computers from malware on its webpage at www.floridabar.org/PRI. The information on the PRI webpage will be updated frequently with additional resources related to cybersecurity.

If you open an attachment or click a link within an email that you suspect is malicious, contact your technical support person or help desk immediately.
